logo ocaDue to the drop in the number of participating teams at the various OCA Competitions, the format and eligibility rules for OCA Competitions are undergoing significant changes for the the 2016-2017 curling season.

It is hoped that these changes will improve the ice utilization at clubs that host these competitions and over time, will increase the participation level of some of these competitions.

The links in the message (click to view) from the OCA, will take you to information about the various events and conference calls, scheduled from May 15 to 19, that are set up to gather more feedback about the changes.

If you have participated in or plan to participate in OCA competitions, please review this information and join the appropriate conference call if you have any concerns or questions.

The World Curling Federation is holding a Sweeping Summit (info) which will address the challenges faced throughout the 2015/16 season with brush head technology and sweeping technique. They have asked curlers to complete a short survey to provide their input.

The Sweeping Summit survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3PP266G and should be completed by Monday 16 May 2016 so that responses can be collated and shared with those attending the summit.

Team photos and action shots are posted - you can download from the photo site.

This year’s Closing Bonspiel, Chaired by our own Sheriff Maureen Campbell and her AMAZING band of Volunteer Deputies, opened and closed out with a bang! Duels were held throughout the week, as teams challenged one another through a series of 3-4 games. At the stroke of 6:50 pm, Tuesday night, thirty-six teams began their ride onto the ice at YCC, where over successive nights, they dueled it on the slippery landscape and later in the lounge with “games a plenty!”. The draws were fast, and the shots were heard far and wide! But fate has a role to play, and in the end, with thirty-three teams put to the side, three teams stood tall; the A, B and C winners!

2016 closing champsLeading the way by winning the “A Event” was our very own Draw Master, John Morrison, and his supporting cast of champions Pam Holik, Lynne Jamieson and Melissa Kauffeldt.

In second place was “Lefty Lemon”, as Lloyd Lemon and his cast of shot makers Karen Cole, John Hall and Judy Walker captured the “B Event”.

And finally, bringing up the rear, and showing he’s still got it was none of other than “Mr. I can’t get enough curling”, Harry Carter and his cast shots and guards led by Greg Klein, Jill Renshaw and Karen Gowdy, as they captured the “C Event”.

A hearty York Curling Club congratulations to all the WINNERS, and to all who participated. This year’s Wild West was truly a classic, and one that we will remember for year to come.

See y’all next year!!
