In February 2013 Lindsay Davies created a magnificent mural that's mounted over our bar. The mural is titled "Famous Canadian Curlers".
"Many wonderful volunteers at our Club ( John, Jack and JoAnn to name a few ) built a beautiful new bar for us and there was overhead space that I thought was just begging to be filled with something unique to set it off.
I had painted a mural in the entrance to our Curling Club several years earlier that was unfortunately lost because of our expansion and I had been looking for a spot to do another mural and there it was.
The painting "Curling on Fairy Lake" hangs above the fireplace at the club. Painted by Katherine "Kit" Robinson in 1963, the painting measures almost 8 feet by 4 feet.
Members may have noticed a new addition to the walls of our lounge! York recently received a very generous donation of memorabilia. Lorne Cox (one of our senior members) purchased one of the original York Curling Club sweaters! The sweater was owned by Shirley Watson, one of our founding members.
The Board and Club members would like to thank Lorne for his thoughtfulness!
At our 50th Anniversary celebration in October 2005, the club recognized Claude Rosborough as a 'founding member'. Claude is the longest active member of York Curling Club.
In 2005 one of our members, Lindsay Davies, painted a beautiful mural on the wall of our front entrance as a gift to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Unfortunately, when the curling club was expanded to 6 sheets our entrance was changed - so this mural no longer exists - but Lindsay has added a new mural.
Comments from Lindsay Davies when she created the mural...
"Let me take this opportunity to thank the members of the YCC Executive for inviting me to join in the celebration of our clubs 50th Anniversary and mark the event with a mural representative of our great sport of curling through the ages.
The following article by Shirley Wilson is re-printed from the Southern Ontario Ladies' Curling Association Memories of 75 Years.
One learns a great deal reading through musty old minute books and newspaper clippings, and a lot of myths and beliefs can be blown up with a loud bang. Most of our present members, the writer included, assumed that our curling club was the very first to be situated in the Town of Newmarket. Wrong! The first, known simply as The Newmarket Curling Club was in operation from 1895 until 1919. The archives of the local paper give no indication why the original club closed up shop, and the sport is not mentioned again until February, 1957 when York Curling Club (Newmarket) Limited was officially opened.
York was founded by a group of local businessmen and was originally slated to be built in the Town of Aurora, but during the summer of 1956 an old army drill hall situated in the Newmarket Fairgrounds became available at the price of $20,000., so Aurora was out and Newmarket in.
