Hello Junior Curlers (and family members),

On September 28, 2021 York region Public Health issued a "Letter of Instruction for Sports Facilities" which details a change order to all Sport Facilities vaccination policies within York Region. This order states that as of October 1, 2021 we must "Require each person, age 12 years and older, at the point of entry, who attends the indoor area of the Facility for the purpose of (a) actively participating in organized sports, (b) coaching, officiating at organized sports or volunteering, or (c) spectating at organized sports, to provide identification and proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or a valid medical exemption."

The vaccination policy that York Curling Club had in place allowed for a buffer period for members to get fully vaccinated by November 15. Unfortunately, we must comply with this order being placed on us by York Region Public Health and there will be no exceptions unless a member is under 12 years of age or they are medically exempt and can provide a valid doctor's note stating that they are medically exempt.

What this means for you is that anyone arriving to participate on Sunday October 3, 2021 for their first games (volunteers and coaches included) will need to provide proof of their second dose of vaccination to be able to play. If this is an issue for any members please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we can work through a plan.

Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to a great season ahead.

For all new curlers, there is a Beginner's Clinic on Sunday, September 26, from 7PM to 10PM.  You can register for the free clinic from the Calendar/Events menu item Event Listing.

For all members, Green/Practice Ice, will be done by a booking process this year.  This is to manage the number of people in the building as we are currently under capacity limitations.  All available practice slots are on the Event Listing page.  Please book your slots and be respectful to others and the ice crew by staying within your time slot.

For those interested in doing some on-ice instruction, York Curling Club is hosting a 2-day Club Coach Course, conducted by the Ontario Curling Council, on September 25 and 26th.  The course cost of $210 plus HST, will be reimbursed by the club to members who provide a minimum of 10 hours of on-ice instruction during the current season and commit to providing 2 hours of on-ice instruction per season going forward.  This course will not only provide you with the tools to provide instruction to others, it will improve your game as well.   You can register for this course from this link to the Ontario Curling Council web site.

Since we are still dealing with the potential spread of COVID-19 even amongst the vaccinated, we want to review some of the main protocols we have in place to keep us safe as possible.  If you have any questions not covered by the following, please send them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

  1. As previously communicated, Proof of Full Vaccination for COVID-19 will be required when you first enter the club, in compliance with the Goverment of Ontario Mandate, issued on September 1, 2021.  Accomodation will be made for those that present a medical exemption and those 11 and under.
  2. Curl Ontario will be providing a contact tracing application that will require you to scan a QR code upon entering the building.
  3. You will be required to do the self-screening for COVID-19 symptoms each time you enter the building.  If you are not feeling well or have any symptoms please do not enter the building.
  4. Masks must be work inside the York Curling Club with a few exceptions outlined in the York Curling Club Mask Policy, in compliance with the Government of Ontario - O. Reg. 364/20: RULES FOR AREAS AT STEP 3 AND AT THE ROADMAP EXIT STEP.  The exceptions when masks can be removed are:
    1. while seated at a designated table to consume food or drink
    2. to participate in athletic activities - curling is considered an athletic activity and the mask can be removed once you have reached your sheet of ice for your game.  Physical distancing must be maintained while on the ice.
  5. The plan is to have the bar operational. Initially the product selection may not be as it has in the past, but that will change as we progress.  Please let us know if there is anything specific you would like to have available at the bar.  Send requests to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. We will be accomodatng as possible.
  6. For the morning and day leagues where volunteer made, self-serve coffee and other hot beverages were available, will have to change.  We are looking at options to have beverages available for those leagues.
  7. Shared food snacks that were traditional in some leagues will also be suspended until further notice.
  8. Physical distancing must be maintained while in the club house as much as possible.  In compliance with previously mentioned O. Reg. 364/20,tables will be positioned so patrons at adjacent tables will be 2 m apart and 8 patrons can be seated at a table.
  9. Club stabilizers and delivery sticks will be provided.  Please ensure you sanitize after you use them.  Rocks, stabilizers and delivery sticks will be sprayed with a sanitizer between draws.
  10. For the most part, the Curling Canada Return-To-Play Guidelines for game play will be followed, See "PLAYING THE GAME" and "COVID-19 GUIDELINES REMAIN IN PLACE", page 23 and 24 of the document.  The following are the highlights:
    1. Single sweeper
    2. no sweeping behind the t-line
    3. to assist with maintaining physical distancing, special markers will be placed in the ice.
    4. some videos demonstrating player traffic flow to maintain physical distancing are available here.

On September 1, 2021 the Ontario Provincial Government released a mandate stating that certain Ontario businesses will be required to request proof of vaccination for people entering their facilities as of September 22, 2021.

What has changed?

The full mandate can be found here but the parts that pertain to York Curling Club are as follows:

"Ontarians will need to be fully vaccinated (two doses plus 14 days) and provide their proof of vaccination along with photo ID to access certain public settings and facilities. This approach focuses on higher-risk indoor public settings where face coverings cannot always be worn and includes:

  • Restaurants and bars (excluding outdoor patios, as well as delivery and takeout)
  • Facilities used for sports and fitness activities and personal fitness training, such as gyms, fitness and recreational facilities with the exception of youth recreational sport

Individuals who cannot receive the vaccine due to medical exemptions will be permitted entry with a doctor’s note until recognized medical exemptions can be integrated as part of a digital vaccine certificate. Children who are 11 years of age and younger and unable to be vaccinated will also be exempted from these requirements."

It is expected that by the end of October there will be an app that has been developed for businesses and Ontario residents alike that allows a business to scan a QR code to determine vaccination status, but unfortunately it will be too late for the start of the curling season.

We understand that this requirement may upset some members but we must comply if we want to open our doors this fall.

What is the plan?

The current plan is that we will have people set up at the front doors of the club during Green Ice Week and the first week of curling with a list of all registered members. In order to enter the facility after September 22, 2021 you will be required to show your vaccination receipts as well as photo identification. We will only ask to see this the first time you enter the club and record that we have seen proof of your vaccination status (unless otherwise instructed by the government). We ask that you are prepared with the vaccination receipts and ID when you enter the building to aid in keeping the process as quick and easy as possible. Please note that you will not be permitted entrance to YCC after September 22, 2021 without proof of a complete vaccination series approved by Health Canada or World Health Organization + 14 days.(e.g., two doses of a two-dose vaccine series, or one dose of a single-dose vaccine series).

How do I access my vaccination receipts?

There is a fairly simple way to access your official vaccination receipts (we will require the official receipts) online. We ask that you try to access these receipts sooner rather than later as there have been some instances where they are not available and you will have to contact your local public health unit or the vaccine portal to gain access to these documents.

To access your vaccine receipts please visit : https://covid19.ontariohealth.ca/

Full instructions on how to navigate the website to access your vaccine receipts can be found here. Please note that if you have a red and white health card or do not have a health card at all you will be required to call the Provincial Vaccine Booking hotline at 1-833-943-3900. The call centre agent can email you a copy of your receipt.

If you have issues with accessing your vaccination receipts the website will prompt you to contact your local Public Health Unit and be provided with a phone number. The earlier you deal with this, the more likely there will be a quick turn around with being able to fix the issue. The closer to the date of issuance, there will be higher demand on the units to fix any errors!
